The Kraken is a legendary Scandinavian sea monster frequently described as a colossal squid that dates back to 13th century Icelandic sagas. Kraken lore says the beast is larger than several ships combined causing unlucky sailors to mistake its body for an island, a blunder which ultimately leads to their demise. Marine monsters are a common folklore theme and exist in various forms such as the Leviathan in the Bible and Jörmungandr in Norse mythology. They appear in classic literature such as Homer’s Odyssey, Jules Verne's Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea, and H. P. Lovecraft's The Call of Cthulhu. The Kraken has been seen more recently as a sigil for House Greyjoy in Game of Thrones and in the Pirates of the Caribbean film series.
