Hekate (palo santo, sage, cypress)

Fragrance notes: palo santo, sage, cypress

Inspired by the ancient Greek goddess of magic, crossroads, and the spaces between worlds, this mysterious fragrance begins with the warm, sacred aroma of palo santo. Its woody character evokes the cleansing smoke of ritual, while earthy sage adds an herbal quality inspired by Hekate's association with plant lore and medicines. Cypress brings a dark, evergreen depth to the fragrance, recalling the tree's ancient association with death and the underworld. Hekate smells like sacred smoke rising beneath the light of the moon, a fragrance of magic, protection, and transformation.

Learn more about my inspiration:

Hekate is an ancient Greek goddess associated with magic and the boundaries between worlds. She was also a goddess of protection, with shrines often placed at doorways, city gates, and crossroads to guard against restless spirits and other dangers. Her symbols include torches, keys, dogs, and serpents, and she was often depicted in a triple form, representing her connection to crossroads and liminal spaces.

Hekate was closely associated with the underworld and was believed to hold the keys to its gates. In the Homeric Hymn to Demeter, she helps Demeter search for the abducted Persephone and later becomes associated with Persephone's yearly journey between the worlds of the living and the dead. Her torches symbolize the light she carries through darkness, while her role as a guardian of thresholds reflects her power over transitions and the unknown.

Her connection to plants and herbalism also runs deep. Ancient sources associate Hekate with the knowledge of medicines, poisons, and magical plants, while cypress was specifically connected with her as a tree symbolic of death and the underworld. The herbal and smoky character of this fragrance pays homage to those ancient associations while creating a modern interpretation of a goddess who has long stood at the crossroads between life and death, magic and mystery.
