Baba Yaga is one of the most popular characters of Slavic folklore. In many tales she is represented as an old crone who lives in the woods in a moving hut standing on chicken legs. The hut is surrounded by the skulls of her victims impaled on pikes. She's got long, sharp teeth made of iron and a grotesque nose. She flies through the woods in a mortar and uses a pestle as an oar. She sweeps away any tracks of her presence with a broom. Baba Yaga is an ambiguous folklore character in that her personality is multi-faceted in stories. She is often seen as a villain luring victims to doom by tricking them and sometimes eating them, especially if they happen to be children found wandering the woods (a cautionary tale for children not to wander). However, she can also be a helpful guide in epic tales in which she helps direct the hero of the story to their destination. Baba Yaga appears in two of the most famous Russian fairytales Vasilissa the Beautiful and the Death of Koschei the Deathless that depict her as both horrible and helpful.
